Whether you're shopping around for your very first motorcycle, or adding to your collection, it's important to factor the cost of insurance into your planning. Fredericksburg motorcycle insurance includes the same basic coverage types as auto insurance, but with a few unique considerations. Here are some tips to help you get the best deal.
Shop Around
Motorcycle insurance rates vary widely, so it's a good idea to approach a number of different insurers for quotes. Start with the insurance company that covers your automobile and perhaps your house or apartment. Many of the large insurance companies offer a multi-policy discount.
Motorcycle Club Discounts
Some insurance companies give discounts if you're a member of a respected motorcycle club such as the American Motorcyclist Association. Motorcycle clubs offer a variety of benefits, but if you're thinking of joining one just for the insurance discount, don't forget to add the cost of joining the club.
Engine Size Affects Your Rates
If you choose a bike with an engine between 50 and 125 cc, insurers will offer a policy with lower rates than if you drive a more powerful machine.
Value of Motorcycle
If you ride an expensive bike, you're going to pay more for insurance. Additional custom features and enhancements that you have added, such as a sidecar, will not be covered on your regular insurance. You will need to ask your agent about coverage for extra custom features. Be sure, however, that you don't over-insure; you will not receive more than the replacement cost of your bike, regardless of the maximum amount shown on your insurance policy. If you've financed your bike and are still making payments on it, you will be required to have enough coverage to pay off that loan in case something happens to your motorcycle.
Secure Storage
The cost of your insurance policy will be affected by the manner and location in which you park your bike. Alarms, high-quality locks, and a secure garage can all improve the rates you're offered. Additionally, your insurer may pay attention to the crime statistics in your neighborhood when estimating a quote.
Safety Classes
If you take extra motorcycle safety classes, you can lower your premiums. Be sure to save any class completion certificates, so that you can document the extra training.
Buy enough liability insurance
This is the coverage which pays for injuries and damages to other people. Your state requires a certain basic amount of liability coverage, but often the state-mandated amount is lower than typical real-life costs. You'll want to talk with your insurance professional about appropriate coverage, and give some thought to the deductible you can afford. If you think you'll ever carry a passenger on your motorcycle, don't forget to add passenger coverage to your policy.
Uninsured/under-insured motorist coverage
This is just as important to have on your motorcycle as it is on your auto. If you or your passenger are injured in an accident with an uninsured motorist, you'll want to have your own insurance as a safety net.
